The only thing I knew about cyberspace before that time, the time I'm

The only thing I knew about cyberspace before that time, the time I'm getting ready to tell you about, was that when I sent an email that's where it would go... into cyberspace. It was just a term I'd heard tossed around, and it the 'web' made the most sense to me in those terms. Technology most of the time is way beyond my comprehension anyway. Just when I began to get the idea of instant messaging, the next wave was instant voice messaging which in essence is line talking on the telephone but it's all through the computer. This new wave of communication sent me back into a lack of understanding, and I once again just attributed it all to cyberspace. It's easier that way. To just explain things by using a catch-all phrase. That way, other people who don't understand think you know what you're talking about at least. Those catch-phrases become a sort of moderator between those who don't understand. Everyone can just nod their heads and smile that way. At least not everyone knows who the idiots are.

The next problem arises when your grandmother, who now thinks you know the most in the family, asks you to explain this instant messaging to her. That in itself isn't really the problem, but rather that since those common phrases have been being used as a moderator for those who are in the know about not being in the know, we've really gotten ourselves confused at this point. We can either confess to grandma that we're completely oblivious, and get a real moderator to explain it all in lay-terms (which is probably the best option anyhow because then we may learn something, or we can just explain the instant messaging as best we can. Either way, we have to at least come clean, and tell grandma that although we know a bit about what she's asking, we have no clue about web development and what the next wave of technology is going to come up with. Basically, she knows as much as I do and it's about time I stop acting like a know-it-all.
